Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, offers various circuits, each with its own unique highlights and experiences. Choosing the right one is very important to ensure you have a great time during your tour.

Table of contents:

Understanding The Machu Picchu Circuits

In general, there are 4 different circuit categories at Machu Picchu, each with slight variations regarding hikes or sites that can be seen. The circuits have an established direction and you have to follow it during the tour. This means that you cannot go back to previously visited archaeological sites in the circuit.

The most popular circuit is the main circuit “Llaqta de Machu Picchu”, which covers the iconic highlights of Machu Picchu, including the Temple of the Sun and the Intihuatana Stone. For those seeking a more adventurous experience, the Inca Bridge Circuit (“Puente Inka”) offers a thrilling hike to a hidden Inca bridge with stunning views.

The circuits including Machu Picchu Mountain or Huayna Picchu offer fantastic views of the ruins and the surrounding landscapes. These peaceful pathways away from the bustling crowds are perfect for those looking for a more calm and uncrowded exploration. Apart from that, Huayna Picchu features the spectacular Temple of the Moon, a lesser-known sacred site nestled in the mountainside.

Please keep in mind that in order to begin your guided tour of the Machu Picchu ruins, you will need to leave the ruins after your hike to one of the two mountains and then reenter. This applies regardless of the order in which you choose to explore.

Each circuit offers a unique perspective on this ancient marvel, allowing you to tailor your experience to your preferences and abilities. Let’s have a closer look at each of them.

Circuit 1 or 2: Llaqta de Machu Picchu

The main archaeological site, called “Llaqta,” which translates to “town” in Quechua, can be explored in depth on the Llaqta de Machu Picchu Circuits 1 and 2, which is usually the circuit we visit our Machu Picchu Tours.

Through its winding route through the center of Machu Picchu, Circuit 1 leads you past well-known sites like Guard house, the agricultural rock quarry, sector Temple of the Sun, Sacred Plaza and the Water fountain. This path offers the classic postcard-like view of the mystical Machu Picchu and its surroundings.

Discover more about Machu Picchu’s lesser-known regions with Circuit 2, which takes you to hidden gems like the Upper Agricultural Sector, the Intihuatana (open from 7:00-10:00 am) and the Temple of the Condor (open from 10:00-13:00 pm ). With this circuit, you can discover hidden areas of the ancient city in an intimate setting while also enjoying the classic postcard-like view.

Both circuits demonstrate the Inca engineering’s inventiveness as well as the spiritual importance of Machu Picchu’s sacred areas.

Things to know:

  • Circuit 1 and 2 helps you to get the postcard-like shot of Machu Picchu, as they include the access to the upper terraces.
  • Circuit 1 and 2 are the best if you want to explore the entire Machu Picchu Citadel.
  • Our tour circuit lasts 2-2.5 hours in total.

Circuit 1 or 2 + Puente Inka (Inca Bridge)

The visit to the Inca Bridge, a historic feat of engineering that formerly functioned as a hidden entrance to Machu Picchu, is the highest point of this adventure. This winding path, cut into the sheer cliff faces, gives amazing views of the untamed landscape below and reveals some of the Inca civilization’s clever defensive mechanisms.

From the main entrance gate of Machu Picchu, you have to walk about 15 – 20 minutes (750 m) to reach the registration hut for the Inca Bridge.

The hike to the Inca Bridge offers great views of the mountains and the best thing is that you are far away from the crowds, so you can enjoy the sounds of birds and branches swaying in the wind.

Things to know:

  • Circuit 1 and 2 helps you to get the postcard-like shot of Machu Picchu, as they include the access to the upper terraces.
  • You will first do the guided tour through circuits 1 + 2 and afterwards hike the Inca bridge. Or the other way around.
  • The main difference to Llaqta de Machu Picchu is the additional hike to the Inca Bridge.

Circuit 3

Machu Picchu’s Circuit 3 takes you on an enthralling tour of the main archaeological area, the lower part of the ancient city of Machu Picchu.

With its steep paths and high cliffs that lead to breath-taking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, the climb is both difficult and rewarding. It takes around 1-1.5 hours each way. Due to the high popularity of this mountain it’s very important to book your tickets several months in advance.

Within Machu Picchu, the Temple of the Moon is an ancient Incan ceremonial site carved into the mountainside. It has fascinating chambers that look like caves and sophisticated stonework.

Starting from the same registration center, the mountain hike follows a part of the path that leads to the summit of Huayna Picchu Mountain.

The route to Huchuy Picchu is a short hike on a narrow path. The round-trip hike should take you 1:30 hours. You’ll take the same route back that you took on the ascent. To finish this hike, you must be moderately fit because the steps are fairly steep.
