Iquitos Travel

As the world’s largest city unconnected by roadways, getting to Iquitos is an adventure in and of itself.

Located in Peru’s northeastern Amazon, the only way to reach Iquitos is by plane or boat. Most travelers fly in from Lima or Cusco (after their adventures through Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley).

Famous for its wildlife and the indigenous tribes that still live scattered throughout the Amazon basin, the Peruvian jungle is a dream vacation for any nature and adventure enthusiast.

EXPLORE
The Peruvian Amazon

While in the Amazon, it’s best to take advantage of expert local guides. Choosing a reputable tour guide for your rainforest adventure is important not only for getting the most out of your trip, but also for your own safety.

Even if you’re an experienced hiker, having a guide with experience in the Amazon rainforest can make for a much smoother journey. Reputable guides are familiar with the geography, know where to find the wildlife, and –most importantly – can prevent dangerous situations such as getting injured or lost in the dense terrain.

The best time to visit Iquitos
Know the seasons

Due to the area’s tropical climate, you can expect warm weather and rain whatever time of year you travel to Iquitos. June, July, and August are often the driest, making them the preferred time for visiting the city and rainforest.

The wet season in Peru starts in November and runs approximately to the end of April. Although the water levels swell considerably during these months, the increase in rainfall shouldn’t hamper your visit. No matter when you arrive, the Amazon rainforest offers amazing sights and beautiful wildlife year round.
