Cusco, the imperial city, promises you a tour with an amazing trekking of 5 days in Vilcanota mountain range, through a route which is called "Camino del Apu Ausangate" (the Apu Ausangate Trail). Definitely, this route will show you some of the most wonderful landscapes of Cusco. During the entire tour, you will be able to get to know local communities and share with them the delicious traditional dishes and the Peruvian products, that will keep you totally satisfied. Itinerary:

DÍA 1: CUSCO - CHILLCA

The tour will start in a comfortable van, which will transfer you along the Vilcanota River to visit first the temple of Checacupe and the beautiful upper valley of Pitumarca. Following the route, you will get to Japura where you will trek a short distance towards Chilca. There, locals will welcome you in your first “Andean Lodge” playing Andean instruments and offering you a traditional coca tea. The lodge offers hot showers and full bathrooms, as well as 8 double and matrimonial bedrooms. Besides, there you will try tasty and nutritious local cuisine, like Alpaca meat, and of course, you can taste vegetarian food or other preferences too. 

 

DÍA 2: CHILCA - MACHURACAY

After breakfast, you will trek alongside thousands of alpacas and llamas in the glacier valley of Phinaya. Looking for more glaciers at Santa Catalina, you will climb by the inspiring Pachaj waterfalls until you reach a place where you will be able to enjoy a delicious picnic. Then, you will walk about 5 hours surrounded by moraine walls, glaciers, and lagoons towards Machuracay Tambo. There, the lodge family will be waiting to welcome you. A llama caravan will be carrying your bags during the journey. 

 

DÍA 3: MACHUCARAY - ANANTAPATA

Starting the day, you will set out on your first mountain pass of 5 m (16.5 ft) with panoramic spectacular views. Descending alongside the glaciers, you will hike to Ausangate Cocha Lake for lunch. Then, you will submerge yourselves in the red sandstone sediment formations, definitely, a wonderful experience. Here, you will see vicuñas and if you are lucky, some condors. After a day of great hiking, you will arrive at the third “Andean Lodge” to enjoy the rest of the day and relax yourselves. 

 

DÍA 4: ANANTAPATA - HUAMPOCOCHA

After breakfast, you will take the trail to another mountain pass, where you will descent to Kayrawiri Lake on foot. During the downhill, you will be surrounded by rugged mountain peaks, a great valley, and if it were not enough, you will also have an amazing view of the colorful striations embedded in the hillsides. Then, you will carry on with your trek going through Inca massive glacier until get to “Cerro Laya Grande”. There, you will contemplate the most striking colors in the sediments of Yauricunca and have lunch surrounded by this unique landscape. On your way to the fourth “Andean Lodge”, you will see hundreds of Andean geese nesting on the cliffs of Anta. Besides, you can see the flatiron formations of Apu Labrayani near Huampococha Tambo, where you will spend the night at “Camino del Apu Ausangate”. 

 

DÍA 5: HUAMPOCOCHA - CUSCO

Continuing with your adventure, you will ascend to your final pass, where you will have a great view of the mountains. From there, you will descend all the way and find some of the fantastic Cretaceous limestone formations. There, you will hike until arriving in Trapiche, and after having experienced a unique trip through the Andes, you will have lunch before you return to Cusco by bus later.

 Schedule:

  • Starting on Friday days between March and November (subject to availability)
  • Departure from the hotel in Cusco: approximately 8:00 am
  • Return to the hotel in Cusco: approximately 4:00 pm

 Duration:

  •  5 days and 4 nights

 Recommendations:

  • Spend the night in Cusco or in other cities located at the same height at least 3 days before the departure of the trekking tour.
  • Being in good shape before the trip to improve your experience to a large extent. 
  • Go to the doctor and the dentist before traveling.
  • Buy a travel insurance that provides medical transportation in emergency cases. Buying the insurance you must tell the insurance salesperson about the kind of travel you will have in order that you can verify the coverage.
  • Hiking boots (If they are new, it is important to use them quite a lot before the hike, because it is common for new shoes to cause blisters)
  • Short or long sleeved T-shirts (One per day), walking pants, and cotton pants
  • Take a polar or thermal clothing for the hike, sweater and/or vest
  • Use a warm coat or jacket, and a hat or acap for the sun
  • Bring thermal sleeping clothes, wool gloves, scarf and socks for sleeping
  • Waterproof pants and “Gore-Tex”jacket or rain poncho
  • Pack a small towel, headlamp/ hand flashlight, pocket knife and a bottle or canteen
  • Plastic bag to keep your batteries dry and a plastic bag for dirty or wet clothes
  • Small backpack to carry snacks, water, a change of T-shirt, etc
  • Binoculars, sunglasses, sunscreen with high SPF and lip balm
  • "Memory Cards" and / or film cartridges
  • Spare batteries for your camera, etc. (Batteries can discharge quickly under low temperatures, and it is impossible to recharge them)
  • Toiletries and a first aid kit

 Terms of Reservation:

  • Minimum 5 days before 
  • Availability of the tour: between march and november (depending on availability)
  • Minimum age: 12 years. Los menores de 18 años, que viajen sin sus padres, deberán presentar una autorización firmada por ellos.

 Terms of Cancelation:

  • Modifications and cancellations are accepted without overcharge or penalty until 31 days before the tour.
  • Modifications and cancellations are accepted with overcharge or penalty until 10 days before the tour, charging the 20% of the total amount of reservation in order to cover operative expenses.
  • Modifications and cancellations within 9 days before the passenger arrival date, will be considered as “no show” and there won’t be refunds.
  • Any portion of the confirmed reservation that has not been used, won’t be refunded.

  • The trip leader has the right to disqualify any participant at any moment of the trip for being physically and mentally unable to continue the trip or endangering the group safety. There is no refund in that circumstances.
