Very early you will start the trekking tour with a departure from Cusco, along the fertile Vilcanota Valley, to the village of Checacupe. After a visit to its Colonial Church of the Lady of the Immaculate Conception, you will start ascending the Pitumarca Valley, through the spectacular Japura Gorge that leads to Chilca. From there, it will only be a short and easy walk to the first “Tambo”. Once at the lodge, you will be greeted by community members and they will be playing Andean instruments. There you will have time to relax and enjoy the music.

On the second day, the hiking begins at 8:30 am in the wide valley of Upis, where impressive glaciated mountains can be seen above the valley offering majestic views. The trek narrows as you make your way towards the waterfalls descending from the Santa Catalina Mountain. This path is mostly used by the wandering llamas of the area. Once you reach the small Paloma lagoon, the countryside will be full of these animals as well as a large number of alpacas. After trekking along a second lagoon and crossing a long series of moraines, you will reach Machuracay Tambo Lodge, located right at the bottom of Apu Ausangate.
